About the Global Dementia Legacy Event Japan

1. A summary of the G8 Dementia Summit
On December 11, 2013, the G8 Dementia Summit was held in London.
The summit was attended by governmental officials from G8 countries, such as Shinako Tsuchiya, the Senior Vice Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the U.K., and Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health of the U.K., as well as representatives of the European Commission, WHO, and OECD. The summit, which was also participated in by dementia experts and representatives of pharmaceutical companies from around the world, introduced governmental policies, ongoing research on dementia, and related social activities implemented based on a variety of viewpoints, and the participants exchanged opinions during inspiring discussions.
Ms. Tsuchiya, the Senior Vice Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare provided explanations of the status of population aging and dementia in Japan as well as a five-year plan (Orange Plan) for the promotion of measures against dementia. As a result of the summit, the Declaration and Communique including challenges to jointly address dementia-related problems were agreed upon by representatives from G8 countries.
2. Primary goals stated in the declaration of the G8 Dementia Summit
- The ambition to identify a cure or a disease-modifying therapy for dementia by 2025 and to increase collectively and significantly the amount of funding for dementia research to reach the goal.
- We will increase the number of people in dementia related research studies.
- We welcome the UK’s decision to appoint a global Dementia Innovation Envoy to draw together international expertise to stimulate innovation and to co-ordinate international efforts to attract new sources of finance, including exploring the possibility of developing a private and philanthropic fund to support global dementia innovation.
- We agree to Work together, to share information about the research we fund, and to identify strategic priority areas, including sharing initiatives for big date, for collaboration and cooperation.
- We commit to encourage open access, where possible , to all publicly funded dementia research and to make the data and results available for further research as quickly as possible.
- We will hold a series of high-level fora throughout 2014, in partnership with the OECD, WHO, the European Commission, the EU Joint Programme on Neurodegenerative Disease (JPND), and civil society, to develop cross sector partnerships and innovation, focused on:

“New care and prevention models” - Japan-led
“Academia-industry partnership” - Canada and France - co-led
3. Global Dementia Legacy Event Japan
(1) Theme:
New care and prevention models
(2) Purposes:
- As dementia is an international issue, a global overview of dementia care and prevention will be presented, and current examples will be introduced.
- The event will encourage people as members of a community (including persons living with dementia, individual caregivers, community residents, organizations to provide care services, and private companies) to become involved in various activities and provide information, and introduce a integrated community care system that Japan aims to establish.
- New technologies and methods, including ICT, will be introduced, and their possibilities will be discussed.
- “New care and prevention models” will be discussed, result will be reported, and propositions for the future will be made if possible.
