Greetings from the Center Director

Welcome to the website of the Center for Development of Advanced Medicine for Dementia (CAMD). CAMD is a research and development center established in 2010 within the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology (NCGG) to conduct advanced and practical research on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care, and support of dementia.

In 2014, CAMD was the first in the world to discover a blood biomarker that predicts amyloid accumulation in the brain of Alzheimer's disease, opening the door to new research on blood biomarkers for dementia (Nakamura et al. Nature. 2018). Today, the development of blood biomarkers for dementia is one of the hottest research areas in neuroscience, and CAMD is working with researchers from all over the world to develop biomarkers not only for Alzheimer's disease but also for other dementia diseases and biomarkers from the very early stages of dementia. Dementia biomarkers are a revolutionary technology for the diagnosis and prevention of dementia, and together with the clinical division of the NCGG (Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders), we will make every effort to deliver the results of our research to you as soon as possible.

On the other hand, therapeutic drugs that stop the progression of dementia (disease-modifying drugs) have not yet been developed. Besides genetic predisposition, many acquired factors such as lifestyle-related diseases, physical inactivity, and malnutrition are involved in the development of dementia. We are also conducting research from new perspectives, such as inflammation and metabolic abnormalities in the central nervous system, vascular disorders, and brain network impairment. In addition, we are conducting a multifactorial intervention trial in older adults at risk of dementia starting in 2019 to test the possibility of preventing dementia through multidomain intervention (J-MINT study). Using the latest neuroscience technology, we are working to prevent, diagnose, and develop treatments for dementia.

CAMD is blessed with an excellent research environment, and there are many opportunities to interact with researchers from around the world. CAMD is striving to prevent dementia and realize an aging society where people can live longer with peace of mind even if they have dementia. We would like to ask for your guidance and support in our endeavors.
