Department of Mechanism of Aging

Objectives and Roles

To clarify the mechanisms of aging through basic research into the aging process at the molecular/cell to tissue/individual levels while considering the patterns of physical and mental changes with age.

Summary of Research Activities

  1. Analyzes the physiological functions of individual aging (changes with age) through comprehensive search for new cell aging-related genes to develop model animals with diseases related to those genes.
  2. Clarifies the veiled mechanism of individual metabolic dysfunction with aging through the researches at molecular and cellular levels, and aims to utilize the results for a prevention or even improvement of various metabolic diseases facing the elderly.
  3. Clarifies the mechanisms of the decrease of immune functions with age with a focus on lymphocytes specifically recognizing certain microbes, and explains the mechanisms of aging in the immune system to develop measures to maintain immune functions.
