Objectives and Roles

To clarify the etiologies of disorders impairing locomotive functions of the elderly, especially osteoporosis and arthropathy, and to develop new technologies for diagnosis and treatment. The ultimate goal is to decrease the number of fragility fractures and bed-bound patients.

Summary of Research Activities

  1. Developed a mouse model for inducible osteocyte ablation, which should be useful to clarify the functions of osteocytes.
  2. Discovered new factors regulating the differentiation and functions of osteoclasts. Currently seeking its application as a diagnostic marker for fracture risk as well as drugs for improving bone quality.
  3. Characterized a unique mouse model of osteoarthritis. Currently searching for the causative genes of osteoarthritis in a mouse model. Given the unprecedented model in the world, results of genetic analysis may provide a new clue on the pathogenesis.
