To make for a better, fuller and more active life for people in our rapidly aging society, more research must be devoted to the aging process, the diseases peculiar to the elderly and, based on the results, we must attempt to control the aging process, overcome disease, and encourage self-reliance among the elderly. It was to comply with these needs and address such issues that the call went out for the establishment of a National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology to make available sophisticated medical technology, research and new techniques. This dream came true when the Japanese Government established our Center on March 1, 2004.
In our Center, we conduct not only highly advanced research in the field of geriatrics and gerontology, but also seek to develop models of medical care for the aged with disease and/or disabilities not only in Japan but also for people all over the world.
